3XY OR DIE - A Portrait of Ron Rude
He is the first man to stage a hunger strike in the name of rock’n’roll because 3XY wouldn’t play him. He is a Melbourne pioneer in the art of home recording and releasing independent albums. He once chained himself to Molly Meldrum’s fence. He introduced the now famous soundtrack artist and Dead Can Dance frontwoman Lisa Gerrard, to the possibilities of reverb. Who is he? He’s Ron Rude - Belgrave’s public nuisance No. 1 - and his exploits and adventures are back on stage!
Written by award winning playwright Kieran Carroll, 3XY OR I DIE! won Best Original Production Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2002. This new version, directed by Ross Daniels (Spontaneous Broadway, Punked, The Transposed Man – Best Comedy Adelaide Fringe 2011), adds a dash of 2012 with Rude talking about friends he’s lost on the way (Rowland S Howard and Paul Hester) and why ex-private schoolboys in the late 70s took the hardest St Kilda drugs around while he watched on: documenting, recording and keeping a day job.
Starring Mark E Lawrence (City Homicide, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Rush) as Ron Rude with a fabulous band of Melbourne indie musicians playing Rude’s greatest misses from the era. 3XY OR I DIE! is both a poignant and hilarious expose of artistic ambition from a remote space, of kicking hard against conservative 70s Melbourne and about being gun-ho in the boulevard of rock’s broken dreams.

Having sold out their ace new EP The Stevens are about to take over the Gaso on Thursday’s in May with an assortment of destroying bands.WIth their ultra catchy indie pop the Stevens (not one of them is named Steve) have become the next Melbourne band to keep an eye on. BANG ON! presents
DUSKEN LIGHTS + FRANCOLIN + EMMA RUSSACK + THE ANCIENTS + TUT TUT KYNGS
Debuting at the Gasometer on Friday June 1st, BangON! returns with the launch of ‘Emu Parade’, an online compilation released on Why Don’t You Believe Me? records and specifically created to raise money for the ongoing maintenance and training of Tallulah Andersons’ autism service dog.
Tallulah is the eldest daughter of Stewart Anderson and Jennifer Turrell, two Arizona-based musicians with a strong connection to the Melbourne music scene from their time spent here and numerous releases by local groups on their global indie label 555 Records.
The bands on the night will be a wealth of Melbourne talent, from the extraordinary Tut Tut Kyngs (a BangON! favourite), to the exceptional Francolin(about to release their debut album), the eminent Emma Russack (whose recent Sounds of Our City was a critical and popular hit), the eloquent Ancientsand the astounding Dusken Lights. A limited CD version of the compilation will be available on the night.

Fierse are releasing another EP hot on the heels of the first and are playing a gig to celebrate. They want you to come This one’s called “5 Elementals”. Its different to the first one, maybe a bit stranger but with a more confident step.
Major Napier will be supporting us on the night, beautiful creature that he is. Don’t miss him, or you miss an emotional spectacle.

The East Brunswick Eye Gougers are pumped up and amped for another season of PUB Footy. To help celebrate, party and raise some team funds for the upcoming season they are holding this belter of a benefit at the Gaso. Entertainment comes from EBEGFC related bands including Dick Diver, Sinking Tins,Fisty Cuffs, Footy and the Lost Volvos. Raffles and heaps of fun. Go Gouge!
